Total energy in the ocean for the full-physics problem described in “Adjoint problem” and “Energy considerations” sections. An earthquake nucleates at time \(t=0\), generating acoustic waves and a tsunami. At time \(t=1000\) s, we switch to the adjoint (time-reversed) problem and the tsunami propagates backward. The black dashed line marks the time of the “initial conditions” in Fig. 10. At this time, virtually all of the energy in the ocean is gravitational potential energy and none is kinetic energy
