The opening of the Sea of Japan has been verified later by paleomagnetic studies, which also revealed that the opening had completed long time ago. Terada (1927) considered that the opening still goes on and also that small islands off the coast of the Sea of Japan, such as Tobishima, are currently moving apart from the mainland fast enough to be detected by astronomical positioning
