Active period of the major active faults in southwest Japan. The major active fault parameters are derived from Earthquake Research Committee (2018). The colored areas represent the active periods of the inland faults before or after the megathrust earthquakes. The black solid and dashed lines indicate the upper and lower edges of the rectangular megathrust fault, respectively. The active period is calculated by varying the intrinsic loading rate (\(\Delta \tau_{s}^{\text{intrinsic}}\)/year) and apparent friction coefficient (\(\mu^{\prime}\)). a 1 kPa/year and \(\mu^{\prime} = 0.1\), b 5 kPa/year and \(\mu^{\prime} = 0.1\), c 1 kPa/year and \(\mu^{\prime} = 0.4\), and d 5 kPa/year and \(\mu^{\prime} = 0.4\)
