Down-dip segmentation of the megathrust and physical parameters in the viscoelastic substrate used in the simulation of seismic ruptures, aseismic slip, and viscoelastic flow at the Japan trench (Miyagi). The cross-section corresponds to the profile A–A’ in Fig. 1. The velocity-weakening and velocity-strengthening segments of the megathrust are shown in yellow and gray color, respectively. Coupling between the two plates is permanent below the brittle–ductile transition. The ambient temperature in the oceanic asthenosphere and in the mantle wedge asthenosphere is shown with the background color. The triangle mesh is used for sampling of the viscoelastic deformation. Contours of steady-state viscosity for \(10^{20}\,\)Pa s, \(10^{21}\,\)Pa s, and \(10^{22}\) Pa s are shown with the yellow, green, and blue profiles, respectively. The small numbers at the corner of fault segments indicate their starting depth in the model
