Spatial distributions of epicenters and stations. The pink circles denote the aftershocks during the initial stage, from the foreshock to the mainshock, and the blue circles denote the aftershocks that occurred up to one day after the mainshock. The pink and blue beachballs are the moment tensor solutions of the foreshock and mainshock, respectively, as determined by F-net of NIED (Fukuyama et al. 1998). The aftershocks that occurred during our temporary seismic station deployment (July 23–September 5, 2016) are shown in orange. The locations of the dynamite shots and receiver lines during the 2003 Hinagu Fault Seismic Expedition (RGHFSE 2008) are indicated by the green stars and crosses, respectively. The dotted rectangles represent the surface projection of the source fault planes for the mainshock in Asano and Iwata (2016). The southern termination of the fault rupture, which is estimated during our study, is indicated by the black arrow. The grid lines show the coordinates for the tomographic inversion in this study. The solid and dashed red lines denote the active faults determined by RGAF (1991) and HERP (2013), respectively.
