Fault models. Thick rectangle is the modeled region, which is divided into 10 km × 10 km subfaults. Two gray regions represent the Tokachi-oki and the Kushiro-oki asperities, respectively. The entire fault is divided into 9 and 71 regions in a model 1 and b model 2, respectively. Frictional parameters are assumed to be uniform within each region. Model 1 is used in the numerical experiments, while model 2 in the application to real data
