Red arrows correspond to eastward directed vectors of velocities that exceed 0.2 m/s, and blue arrows correspond to the westward directed vectors of velocities that exceed 0.2 m/s. The strong eastward current flowing along the Philippine Islands, Taiwan, and Japan is the Kuroshio. The westward current south of the Kuroshio is the Kuroshio recirculation, and the eastward current around 27° N is the subtropical counter current (STCC). The dashed-line ellipses correspond to mesoscale eddies. Nishinoshima and Iriomote Islands are indicated by a star and a triangle, respectively
