The average density distribution is plotted as a projection on the cross-sectional plane that is parallel to the detector plane and which includes the 1944 Usu lava dome peak. The distribution of the average density was reconstructed by applying the flux-depth relationship for cosmic-ray muons through rock (Fig. 1) to the path length (L) calculated from the surface shape of the mountain for each horizontal and vertical arriving angle. The right axis is in units of meters corresponding to the elevation of the dome peak.
