Plot of cumulative numbers of aftershocks of more than or equal to M 5.0 versus time for various events in Japan, in addition to the 2004 Sumatra and 2010 Chile earthquakes. As the aftershock area of several mainshocks, we defined an area where earthquakes more than or equal to M 5.0 occurred within a week after the mainshock. The horizontal axis denotes elapsed time after the origin time of each mainshock. Two thin red lines indicate aftershocks in north and south regions in Fig. 1(a).
