Real and imaginary indices of refraction n (λ) and k(λ) for crystalline forsterite Mg2SiO4 (solid line, dotted line, dashed line). Sharp peaks in n below 0.15 µ m are X-ray absorption peaks (panel a inset). New laboratory data segments in the mid-UV to VIS from 0.214–0.330 µ m and in the NIR from 3.278–5.1 µ m set k lower than predicted from modeler-constructed “astronomical silicate” values (Draine, 2003b; gray dash-dot line).
