The syringe containing the suspension is connected to the electrospray needle by plastic tubing. The needle (+3500 V) is located 1.3 cm from a grounded orifice into vacuum. Electrosprayed droplets enter the vacuum system through a 150 μm orifice where they pass through a 30 cm heated beam tube before entering the rest of the vacuum system.
