Tectonic setting of the Kanto region, central Japan. The Pacific plate is descending beneath northeast Japan and the Philippine Sea plate. The Philippine Sea plate is descending beneath the Boso peninsula at the Sagami trough and running on the Pacific plate at its eastern margin. The arrows indicate the directions of plate motion relative to the Kanto region. The contours indicate bathymetry at the interval of 1000 m. Dark gray areas in land indicate the Shimosueyoshi surface formed during the last interglacial period (125 kyr BP) (Koike and Machida 2001)
