Plots of element concentrations (in mg/L) in the main thermal springs (Bajo Las Peñas, San Cayetano and Santa Teresita) and Irazú lake vs average element concentrations in Irazú rocks (in mg/kg), which are fully comparable to those of Turrialba rocks. Chemical compositions of Irazú and Turrialba rocks are averaged from published data: Clark et al. (1998), Benjamin et al. (2007) for Irazú rocks (# 30 samples); Reagan and Gill (1989) for Turrialba’s rocks (# 7 samples). Oblique lines indicate water–rock ratios ranging from 1 to 108
