Spatial distribution and crack orientation dependence of the RMS residuals between the observed and synthetic waveforms obtained by waveform inversion using the three-component broadband seismograms at the three stations (nine components). The residual distribution is in five dimensions (three for the source location and two for the crack orientation). In the spatial distribution plot, the residual distribution for two of the grid search parameters are shown, taking the minimum residual values for the other three parameters. The locations of candidates (a), (b), and (c) are indicated by straight lines on the plane map, and the orientation dependence at these locations are shown in the panels below. The stars represent the orientation of the opening crack. The black lines indicate topographic contours at 100-m intervals
