Editorial

I have been appointed as the Editor-in-Chief of the journal “Earth, Planets and Space” (EPS) for four years, starting from January 2013, after the eight years of dedicated work by the previous Editor-in-Chief, Kiyoshi Yomogida.

The scope of EPS is broad and it covers Earth and Planetary Sciences; in particular, geomagnetism, aeronomy, space science, seismology, volcanology, geodesy, and planetology. EPS also covers articles in new and interdisciplinary subjects, including instrumentation. In addition to regular issues, EPS promotes special issues. We invite proposals for special issues on topical projects and on geoscientiflc events, such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Please refer to the guidelines for special issue proposals on the web page of EPS (http://www.terrapub.co.jp/journals/EPS/specialissues.html).

Speeding up the reviewing process is one of the most important keys to the success of EPS. From last year, we have introduced a web-based reviewing system. This helps to shorten the time of the review process.

We have been promoting open access publications using an “e-letter” section, which has no page charges, and also open access publications on some thematic special issues. We will further expand the journal in this direction. We have decided to change the entire publication style as of next year. EPS will be an open access journal from January 2014. For open access publication, the author pays an Article Processing Charge and the final copy-edited version will be available online immediately and free of charge to all readers.
