Tectonic setting in northeast Japan and seismic cycle at the Miyagi segment. The rupture area of large earthquakes in the last century, including the 1978 and 2005 Mj\(\sim\)7 earthquakes, the 1981 Mw = 7.1 and 2003 Mw = 6.9 earthquakes (Nakata et al. 2016), and the 2011 Mw = 9.1 Tohoku earthquake (Bletery et al. 2014), are shown in colored contours. The continental shelf (dashed profile) provides an indication on the extent of the Japanese island arc (volcanos as red triangles). The triangles represent GEONET GPS stations on land (Sagiya et al. 2000; Ozawa et al. 2011), and seafloor geodesy monuments offshore (Watanabe et al. 2014; Tomita et al. 2015). Only the geodetic data within 50 km of the two-dimensional cross-section A–A’ are considered (black triangles)
